Santa Monica, California is located in western Los Angeles County and gets its name from the Christian saint, Monica. Santa Monica’s original inhabitants were the Tongva people. The completion of the Santa Monica Freeway in 1966 ushered in a new era of growth and prosperity.
The Santa Monica Loof Hippodrome is considered a National Historic LandMarc, an integral component of the Santa Monica Pier (constructed in 1909). During the 1960s, the Santa Monica Civic Auditorium hosted the Academy Awards. Tourists and locals enjoy three distinct shopping districts, including Montana Avenue, Main Street and the Downtown District. The city also hosts the annual Santa Monica Film Festival. Santa Monica is also an enormously popular destination for skateboarding enthusiasts.
City government, UCLA Medical Center, Santa Monica College, RAND Corporation and Lionsgate Entertainment are some of the largest employers in Santa Monica. Numerous films and television shows have shot exterior scenes along the Santa Monica Pier, and countless songs have been written popularizing the city.
