Culver City is a city in western Los Angeles County with a population just under 39,000. Perhaps best known as the home of Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer (MGM) studios, Sony Pictures Entertainment and the NFL Network, Culver City is a major player in California’s film industry.
According to archaeologists, humans have been calling Culver City home for over 8,000 years, with the Tongva-Gabrielino Native Americans the predominate occupants. Officially incorporated in 1917, Harry Culver gave the city its nickname, “All roads lead to Culver City.”
Numerous films have been filmed on the various studios that comprise Culver City. Classics like The Wizard of Oz, Gone with the Wind and King Kong were all filmed in Culver City, as were Grease, E.T. and Raging Bull. Television series that called Culver City home include Las Vegas, Gunsmoke, Arrested Development and Jeopardy!
The largest employers in Culver City include Sony Pictures Entertainment, Culver City Unified School District, NFL Media, Target and Beats by Dre. Culver City is also home to West Los Angeles College. Notable residents include Drew Barrymore, Jack Black, Howard Hughes, Jackson Browne and Jeff Fisher.
